Music lovers at heart, Evergreen was thrilled to recently participate in Jack Johnson’s All At Once Village Green, designed to engage fans with the work of local environmental not-for-profits. As part of our fundraising initiative at the concert, we raffled off a surfboard, snowboard and autographed guitar to three lucky concert-goers and raised $2,130 of our $2,500 fundraising goal!

The Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation will be matching every dollar raised by Evergreen before October 16, 2010, up to $2,500. With your help, we can raise the remaining $370 of our fundraising goal, allowing us to bring people together to make our communities better places to live. All you need to do is watch our 2010 Non-Profit Video, and the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation will donate $1 per complete viewing. Time is running out!

A special thanks to Hugh Nichols, West Coast Music, Thriller Shop and Ark Surfboards for their generous donation of time and raffle items!

Lasting Outdoor Classrooms

It’s one thing to start an Outdoor Classroom project, but how do you make it last? Here in the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds program, we sometimes hear from school teachers or parents who want to green their school grounds, but feel that once they or their kids leave the school, the maintenance and care required to keep the outdoor classroom growing will go with them.

Meet Colin – Development Intern

February 1, 2010

There are many inspiring people working to make cities more livable across Canada. Meet Colin Campbell, a project intern in our development department.

When and where: I’ve been volunteering in Evergreen’s downtown Toronto office since November 2009.

What’s your passion? Assisting businesses to efficiently operate with respect for people and the environment is the job for me.

Why volunteer? At Evergreen I am able to learn more about large non-profit organizations and their methods of influencing corporate responsibility and sustainability. I want to make a positive impact on the environment and the communities within it, in the best way I can.

Most memorable moment: Once, before leaving for an important meeting, I grabbed a travel mug to take water with me. One sip and I realized that a coffee-lover had prior use of the mug, and the taste lingered in my water. All I could do was try to take small sips and not cringe in front of a potential sponsor!

What else do you do? I co-direct a youth sports camp during the week, but spend a lot of time training as a triathlete. I will be participating in four competitions this season. I love the outdoors, being active, and riding my bike whenever I can!

New Arbour for the Vancouver City Hall Community Garden

November 13, 2009

Recently, I spent a beautiful day with 25 dedicated gardeners at the Vancouver City Hall Community Garden, where we constructed an entrance way arbour. This was our first work party at the garden, and we were happy for the great turn-out, sunny weather and amazing results! The garden now features a beautifully constructed entrance way arbour, two full perimeter gardens and a calming healing garden.

Check out the below video to see the community gardeners hammering away on the arbour and partaking in the funky “compact dance” to prepare the soil for planting!

Evergreen Brick Works Farmers’ Market guests had a special treat this past Saturday, October 17: a traditional First Nations Fall Harvest Feast and Social. Jacqui Levalley, an elder from the Toronto community, led a beautiful opening ceremony, which was followed by an array of songs, colourful dances and a harvest blessing.

Matthew Hupfield, the Aboriginal Community Development Co-ordinator for Evergreen, came up with the idea for the Harvest Social.

“The event allows the First Nations community to check out the Brick Works and allows the community at the Brick Works to experience some First Nations culture,” he explains. “What better way to do that than with food, dancing and celebration? People enjoyed the food and certainly got more than just a voyeuristic sample of another culture– they got to experience it.”

On September 19, over 300 environment-loving kids and their parents gathered at Evergreen Brick Works to meet Enviro Girl!  Evergreen and TVOKids presented Greenbelt Adventure Day during the Saturday Farmers’ Market where eco-conscious children had the chance to try hands-on activities and to see their favourite TVOkids hosts perform list. Some even scored a super-hero autograph!
Check out the live stage show here!

Kids also got a special treat in the garden where local artists-in-residence Morgan Zigler and Shannon Crossman were demonstrating how to make miniature edible bricks. Ingredients for tasty polenta or cacao bricks where mixed by hand, formed and then eaten. Non-edibles were constructed out of a cob mixture and the debate over food or shelter materialized.

Another SUPER day at Evergreen Brick Works Farmers’ Market!

Notes of Inspiration

September 23, 2009

It’s true that Evergreen volunteers are an inspired bunch, but last Sunday, September 20, one Markham resident felt truly inspired to see his community hard at work making the town a little greener. While members of the Markham Lions Club and local residents were busy planting 500 native trees and shrubs in Austin Drive Park, a bonnie bagpiper showed up and treated us all to his cheerful notes.

Check out the video below for some sweet sounds of community in action.
