Fairchild TV

After Evergreen was featured in Ming Pao, a leading Chinese newspaper, we received another opportunity to reach out to the Chinese community through a one hour TV interview with Fairchild TV called “Leisure Talk!”

Fairchild TV caters to Chinese Canadians living in Toronto and Vancouver. The filming took place on December 14 and the show will air in March. And what a pleasant surprise, our host was Dennis So ( 蘇敏聰), a well known actor from Hong Kong!

The whole experience was refreshing, fun and exciting; we had our makeup done, got our message out and an exclusive look of the TV studios! We feel very fortunate about the opportunity and we look forward to collaborating some more with FairchildTV as well as the Chinese community!

Evergreen's Executive Director Geoff Cape (Photo: Vito Riccio)

Geoff Cape has earned some great accolades since founding Evergreen almost 20 years ago. You’d never know it, but this humble guy has been named the Schwab Foundation Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year, an International Ashoka Fellow, and one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, to name just a few.

Recently, Geoff had the opportunity to talk about his experience as a social entrepreneur at the MaRS Entrepreneurship 101 series.  Here’s the recap on the MaRS blog.  Here’s the video: http://vimeo.com/17199824

Celebrating 10 years of Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds!

This year marks a milestone in the partnership between Evergreen and Toyota Canada. Together, we created the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds program over a decade ago and have since been providing funding and support to Canadian schools for their school ground greening initiatives.

From the beginning of the partnership, we have awarded $2,070,090 in grants to over 2,200 schools and have had a direct impact on almost 900,000 students across the country. This work would not have been possible without the support of Toyota Canada and its numerous dealerships. Thank you.

To commemorate this important anniversary, Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds will soon be unveiling a special logo that will be used over the next year. The logo will serve as a reminder of the strong partnership that Evergreen has created with Toyota Canada.

Evergreen is happy to celebrate this important partnership and we look forward to the continued success of the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds program. Stay tuned for more exciting details on other ways we will be celebrating this and the upcoming 20th anniversary of Evergreen!

Friday the Thirteenth Scare: Giant Hogweed

August 13, 2010

Giant Hogweed (Photo: Joe Ferreira, IPM Specialist, City of Brampton)

You may have heard a lot of panic in the news lately about this plant. Even though today is Friday the Thirteenth, we wanted to bring you just the facts:

This towering plant with large, white, umbrella-like flowers may look harmless–or even inviting–but the reality is quite the opposite.  The giant hogweed is an invasive species that produces up to 120,000 seeds that spread by wind and water.  The seeds typically sprout in the first two years but can remain in the ground more than five years, eventually dominating a habitat.  The pesky plant also has natural defenses that can cause various skin irritations.

Black-Eyed Susan pops up at Evergreen Brick Works (photo: Geoff Cape)

A note from Geoff Cape, Evergreen’s executive director.

In an urban environment, nature can be found in the most unusual places. Artist Ferruccio Sardella has toyed with this concept in his 15 years of work with Evergreen and made a big statement during this past Doors Open weekend. His installation, a particularly large Black-Eyed Susan, bursts from an abandoned warehouse. Measuring 16 feet across and facing south across the lower Don River, this native plant smiles upon downtown Toronto. It is the first in a series of nearly 20 window installations that will populate the site later this year.

Sardella’s work brilliantly celebrates the idea of nature in the city and speaks playfully about how it will find its way through cracks in the pavement, and in third story windows. Stop by the site any time to see it for yourself.

Our New (and Old) Websites

April 29, 2010

Our new websites

We’re counting down the days until the new season begins at Evergreen Brick Works, the new community environmental centre in Toronto’s Don Valley, and as we gear up for spring we’ve also been tuning up the brand new Evergreen Brick Works website. You may also have noticed that our national site, evergreen.ca, got a major overhaul in December. So we thought it might be fun to dig through the archives to see where we’ve been…

"Red, Hot & Green!" – The Evergreen Foundation's website in late 1996.

1996 – Ah, the Nineties. We were still known as the Evergreen Foundation back then, and on the web, bevelled buttons and textured backgrounds were all the rage. (Click the image to view the site at archive.org.) Read the rest of this entry »

Optimism from the “Greener Davos”

February 1, 2010

Geoff Cape in Davos.

Evergreen’s executive director Geoff Cape is blogging from The World Economic Forum.

If Davos 2009 was dominated by the financial crisis, 2010 is dominated by ideas around sustainability. After two days here in at the World Economic Forum, I can report with confidence that the green agenda is fully represented. I am impressed so far.

It begins with the front-of-program positioning of the “Greener Davos,” which involves elaborate public transit services for all participants (rather than the usual black Mercedes), pedometers for all and recycling programs for all waste. There is a very long list of sessions on topics such as green design, the state of the oceans, climate change, energy, transportation, water and waste management. Others are related to shifting consumer behaviour, the environmental challenge of short-term profit motives and the protection of our global commons: air, water and soil.

Geoff Cape’s Winter Adventures

January 28, 2010

Geoff Cape is blogging from Davos.

Evergreen’s executive director Geoff Cape is blogging from The World Economic Forum.

This is going to be a big year for Evergreen. It is hard to know how to put it into context this early, but I am optimistic for the adventure ahead.

Over the next 15 days I will be attending three special events.  My first stop is the mountain village of Davos, Switzerland for the 40th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum. It will be my second visit to this unique gathering of 2,000 people from around the world.

After this, I will return home to Toronto just long enough to change before heading to Washington to accept a National Geographic award for Evergreen Brick Works.  From there, I will check in with my dear family and the growing pile on my desk before heading to Vancouver to participate in a Sustainability Forum hosted by Walmart.

My head is spinning just thinking of it all.
