Faux or Fir? A Holiday Tree Triumph

December 15, 2009

Don't forget to think about decorations! (Photo: Brad Deller)

The holiday season is upon us. As we dust off our reusable gift bags and set the timers on our strings of energy-efficient LED lights, many of us wonder how we can rise to the next level of holiday greening. Some will hand-make something special or donate to charity in lieu of gifts.

There are many ways to celebrate the season thoughtfully and sustainably, and we suggest that this year you rethink one of the season’s biggest icons: the Christmas tree.

Many folks in the non-profit sector will relate to “the space issue” all too well: Too many people, not enough room. It’s common to have office and even desk sharing, rotating times working from home, an overflowing fridge, holding meetings at nearby coffee shops…

We love our open-concept office on Adelaide Street West, but we are really outgrowing the space. Read the rest of this entry »

December 7, 2009

Each year, our talented team of Learning Grounds Consultants offer many informative and stimulating workshops for teachers and school boards across Canada.

Depending on the workshop you choose to attend, you could learn:

  • school ground greening and food garden tips
  • how to fundraise
  • native plant information and identification
  • how to design your project
  • how to engage your students in outdoor classroom activities
  • and so much more!

As the air gets colder and the ground harder, our fall workshops are wrapping up and the consultants are busy preparing for winter and spring!

Check out the last of the December workshops still available and stay tuned for new postings.

It was a  warm, sunny day in September that I volunteered to help my co-worker Kim at a weekend event, but when planting day came, so did the cold and rain. Trooper that I am, I put on my raincoat and thought of the 30 trees and shrubs that were waiting to be planted.

This particular greening project took place with staff from Mississauga’s Teck Metals as part of the new Greening Corporate Grounds program. Evergreen and Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) have partnered to launch this initiative, which supports corporations, businesses, institutions and places of worship that want to green their grounds. Despite the weather, Teck staff were happy to be outside, turning a small corner of their front lawn into a dynamic green space.

Greening school grounds in Japan!

Exploring tree-tops in Japan (Photo: Dr. Ko Senda)

It’s recess and children are playing in a mud puddle and running through the tree tops! No, it isn’t a student mutiny, it’s Tokyo, where the innovative school-ground design of  Japanese landscape architect Dr. Ko Senda is catching on.

I met Dr. Senda earlier this week when he paid the Evergreen Learning Grounds team a visit. Dr. Senda designs daycares and school grounds at Tokyo’s Environment Design Institute. Over the course of two days we learned about his work, discussed design constraints and possibilities, and showed him some of our school ground design work here in Toronto.
