A Reason to Celebrate

As 2010 begins to unfold, it’s a perfect time for reflection and sharing.  Talking to staff around the office, my colleagues Zanita and Alix who manage our community grant program had a great story of how they ended up at the Slovenian Home Association Christmas Banquet this past December.  The two of them had incredible tales of how they were treated to a night of dancing to a live Slovenian rock band, great company and a four course meal.  How Zanita and Alix came to know the Slovenian Home Association is the best part.

The story started back in 2008 when the Slovenian Home Association (SHA)  received a community grant from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources-Evergreen Community Tree Planting  program to achieve their pledge to the UN’s Billion Tree Campaign.  The SHA made the ambitious pledge to plant 4,000 trees during an Earth Day event, and was successful in doing so in Bancroft, Ontario.  Even more inspiring is the fact that this motivated group of volunteers was able to plant all of the trees on one rainy weekend, with a start time of 5:30 am.

Volunteers were recruited for this event from the Slovenian Community in Toronto, and were lead by a WW2 freedom fighter and former member of the Canadian Olympic Gymnast Team who is credited with ensuring that the event was run with military precision!

Thank you to the Slovenian Homeowners’ Association for showing us how great community spirit and a willingness to take action can make a difference towards making our cities a little greener.
