Canada’s Federal Positions Face Criticism at COP15

December 17, 2009

In this update from Copenhagen, Stephanie Levy speaks to the intense criticism Canada has come under for our positions in the COP15 climate change negotiations, both on the home front and on the international stage. She also shares her hope based on what political leaders at the municipal and provincial levels are doing despite our national positions:

The past few days have been incredibly interesting, albeit frustrating.  As the whole world knows, Canada has been doing its best to obstruct a fair and ambitious deal.  I was in the Conference Centre on Friday night when Canada won both first and second place fossil awards. But when Toronto Mayor, David Miller, stepped up to accept the award, saying that he came as an embarrassed Canadian, I felt hope.  Vancouver Mayor, Gregor Robertson, was in our office Monday morning for an interview and said: “As a country, Canada has been despicable with carbon emissions.  We need to change that.”

Faux or Fir? A Holiday Tree Triumph

December 15, 2009

Don't forget to think about decorations! (Photo: Brad Deller)

The holiday season is upon us. As we dust off our reusable gift bags and set the timers on our strings of energy-efficient LED lights, many of us wonder how we can rise to the next level of holiday greening. Some will hand-make something special or donate to charity in lieu of gifts.

There are many ways to celebrate the season thoughtfully and sustainably, and we suggest that this year you rethink one of the season’s biggest icons: the Christmas tree.

We’re Growing!

Many folks in the non-profit sector will relate to “the space issue” all too well: Too many people, not enough room. It’s common to have office and even desk sharing, rotating times working from home, an overflowing fridge, holding meetings at nearby coffee shops…

We love our open-concept office on Adelaide Street West, but we are really outgrowing the space. Read the rest of this entry »

Cookies for Change

December 14, 2009

Vision Youth team baking up some treats! (Photo: Szu Cheng Yu)

When the Vision Youth team decided to take action and continue their support of urban greening, they turned to their kitchen for answers and the results were quite tasty.

Perhaps it was the sweet sounds of the bag pipes that inspired them, but after coming out earlier this fall to plant trees in Austin Drive Park with Evergreen, the Town of Markham and the TRCA, the seven youth from the Vision Youth Leadership program banded together to bake cookies to raise funds for Evergreen’s work in their area.

The cookies were a hit among friends and family and the donation will make sure the team and other members of the community can return to do some stewardship work in the park. Many thanks to the Vision Youth team for making greener communities and delicious cookies!

This past Monday, delegations from 192 countries representing government, the corporate community and civil society convened in Copenhagen, Denmark for the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15). Our very own Stephanie Levy, Project Manager for the Mahon Park Stewardship Project in British Columbia, is among the thousands of concerned citizens attending COP15. She was chosen by the Global Observatory out of a pool of international applicants to attend and provide her own global insight on the climate change negotiations.

COP15 will be running until December 18, and Stephanie will be blogging about her experience and perspectives throughout its duration. Today, she shares her initial thoughts on the conference and its host country, Denmark:

“Kongens Nytorv” he said, over-pronouncing each word.  “I’m sorry, can you say that again?”  “KONGENS N-Y-T-O-R-V,” he sighed.  “Okay,” I said, “one more time, in my good ear.”

Mayor of North Vancouver Hosts Volunteer Appreciation Event

December 9, 2009

Local feast at the Mayor's. (Photo: Stephanie Levy)

This fall we wanted to show our appreciation for the passionate stewards of the Mahon Park Stewardship Project in North Vancouver, B.C., in a way that was meaningful, local and didn’t require catering. In a flash of inspiration we asked the Mayor of North Vancouver, Darrell Mussatto, if we could host a party at his house, and lucky for us, he agreed!

Furtle the Turtle is born! (Photo: Morgan Zigler)

What do turtles, bread and art all have in common?

The new and improved “Furtle” the Turtle Bread Oven, of course! This summer, I worked with Sketch, a working arts organization for street-involved youth, to complete the beautiful bread oven we had started last year.

Led by Evergreen’s Artists in Residence Shannon Crossman and Morgan Zigler along with the Sketch Artist Co-ordinators Kerry Boileau and Sue Cohen, youth participants learned about sustainable shelter, and together we experimented with cob to insulate and decorate the wood-fired oven.

Finding a home for our oven was the next phase. We decided a mobile cart would enable us to roll the oven around the site. After taking into consideration the weight of our oven – more than half a tonne! – we had to order a custom built metal chassis to support it.

Youth artists from Sketch also designed and installed a shingled roof with green roof panels, a rain water collection system, mosaic work surfaces as well as storage for wood and utensils.

The finished product was toasted with a community celebration when we fired up the oven and made bread together. All season long the oven played a part in Sun-Ripened Saturdays activities at Evergreen Brick Works, when families and children would make and share delicious edible creations together.

Please feel free to visit Furtle next time you’re down at the site.

Learning Grounds Fall Workshops Wrap-Up

December 7, 2009

Each year, our talented team of Learning Grounds Consultants offer many informative and stimulating workshops for teachers and school boards across Canada.

Depending on the workshop you choose to attend, you could learn:

  • school ground greening and food garden tips
  • how to fundraise
  • native plant information and identification
  • how to design your project
  • how to engage your students in outdoor classroom activities
  • and so much more!

As the air gets colder and the ground harder, our fall workshops are wrapping up and the consultants are busy preparing for winter and spring!

Check out the last of the December workshops still available and stay tuned for new postings.
